Personality: A legendary soldier, admired by most of those who know him, enemies and allies alike. Big Boss has many faces: someone who knows him would say he is someone with a golden heart, yet grumpy at times. He has a natural gift to speak with people, help them, understand them. He’s friendly and doesn’t back away from people, even though it may take time for him to truly trust them- Remnant of a past made of betrayal, both from his countries and closest friends. Actually, he can even make friends with enemies, most of the soldiers in his unit having once been amongst the enemies. His words reach to men’s hearts, and they are honest.

He is very open-minded and will respect opinion that differ from his, even if he believes they are wrong. That is, unless they are downright dangerous ideas. He has spent most of his life on the battlefield and only felt alive when he was fighting. He’s met and became friend with countless people in war. And yet, his most memorable memories from the field are all linked to one person: The Boss.

Speaking of Big Boss without mentioning The Boss would be a sin. The Boss was THE legendary soldier- A status that Big Boss inherited upon killing her. He was her apprentice and for years they spent every moment together on the battlefield, developed new and revolutionary battle techniques. She taught him everything she knew- The relationship they developed was unique, but not one of lovers. In a sense she was the mother he never had, yet more at the same time. She was his mentor and the one person mattering the most to him. They lived and died together, that’s not a relationship that can be described easily. Big Boss felt abandoned when they parted, but this was due to a secret mission given to her by the US Government.

And when they reunited? He had to kill her. Officially she had betrayed America and defected to Russia, but the truth was that it was all an elaborate ploy to have The Boss killed. Big Boss didn’t want to kill her, but it was his mission and nuclear war was the risk if he failed. He carried over his mission, out of loyalty to his country, out of loyalty to what The Boss taught him, but upon learning that her death was nothing more than the result of a gigantic machination- His beliefs were shaken and changed. From then on, he didn’t fight out of loyalty to his country, but loyalty to himself. To his beliefs, to what The Boss passed on to him. At first he allied with an old friend of his, Zero, to accomplish The Boss’ vision of an united world. They formed The Patriots as the successor to an older organization. But Zero’s interpretation of The Boss’ vision differed from his, and after a final betrayal by Zero, Big Boss left. With that, he cut all tie to the US and formed his own military company, militaries without countries, without borders. He would carry out The Boss’ will the best he could.

He had been granted the title of Big Boss because he had managed to defeat The Boss, but he refused to use it. He didn’t believe he was superior to her, and indeed he is not. He’s different, he has his own qualities, and it’s only ten years latter when he learnt some truths about The Boss that he realized this and accepted to use his title. He realized the Boss had stopped fighting. She betrayed herself as a soldier, and by extension, she betrayed him. It was obviously a wrong interpretation, but it was what he believed. He understood he had to walk his own path and did what he believed was right. He respected her still and wished to carry out her will, but he would do it his way, he would forge his own destiny.

What did he believe in? He believed he needed to give soldiers a place where they would always be needed. Soldiers were only tools used by the government then discarded when they weren’t needed. It’s what they did to The Boss, they got rid of her when her usefulness ran out. No more. He was ready to give them a battlefield to fight, not for a country but for themselves, and he would train those who needed to fight, no matter their age. Soldiers without a nation, fighting for themselves wouldn’t be taken once more in such plots made by governments- And thus he thought to accomplish The Boss’ will.

Nevertheless, in spite of his natural attraction to war, Big Boss disliked to kill people. In sneaking mission, he would always privilege using non-lethal means to dispatch if enemies if the need arose. He refused to kill people unable to defend themselves and always valued life other death- This didn’t mean he wouldn’t kill if needed. He killed countless times will kill many more times.

For all of his legendary status, for all of his desire of combat, for all of his intelligence- Big Boss is nothing more than a big child. Naïve, gullible. He loves cardboard boxes, to hide and move in them. His dream was fulfilled when one of his engineers made a tank-cardboard boxes. He truly believes Santa Claus exists and follows him on NORAD whenever he can. He just can be very gullible.

Last but not least, he can snap. At this point in time, Big Boss is still a good person, who works for the greater good using good ways, but he is morally gray: he loves war and doesn’t hesitate to train child soldiers. His future is basically to become a well-intentioned extremist, trying to start World War III so that soldiers will always have a purpose. It is far, but this is his destiny and if his faith in humanity was to be crushed earlier and faster, he could turn on to the dark side faster. Likewise, would he be to develop relationships with good people who would show him those ways are terrible, he could become a better person and avoid falling down this path.

Abilities: If we’re speaking about supernatural power, nothing. He is, at first glance, as human as any other human being. Nevertheless, he is considered to be the greatest soldier to have ever lived, and the study of his DNA revealed the Soldiers’ genes and was the basis to build the next generation forces.

In fact, it is a theme with the series, and the Snakes. He is able to face and defeat those with supernatural power, while he uses only his skills and normal weapons. He is one of the most skilled soldier ever, has an IQ far above average (an IQ that qualifies to define geniuses) and has a gift to speak with people and recruit them for his cause. He even ‘visited’ the world of the dead once, and was sent back to the world of the living unharmed- Big Boss is definitely not an ordinary man.
